Medicine in Chinese Cultures: Comparative Studies of Health Care in Chinese and Other Societies
Medicine in Chinese Cultures: Comparative Studies of Health Care in Chinese and Other Societies
This book consists of papers and discussions contributed to a conference, Comparative Study of Traditional and Modern Medicine in Chinese Societies, sponsored by the University of Washington and the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, and held in Seattle, Washington, February 4-6, 1974. The papers have been revised by the participants and the discussions condensed by the editors. The editors have written introductions for each section, changed the format of presentations to make them more readable and have provided an Introduction and Epilogue. It is hoped the book reflects the excitement that the organizers and participants felt about the conference, and it is believed it will contribute to both the major themes of the conference: Understanding medicine in Chinese culture, and comparative cross-cultural studies of medicine. The conference was characterized by interchanges by social scientists and physicians, China scholars, and students of other cultures and systems of medicine, whose scholarly concerns constantly were intermixed with practical questions about health care.

Socrates in Sichuan: Chinese Students Search for Truth, Justice, and the (Chinese) Way
Socrates in Sichuan: Chinese Students Search for Truth, Justice, and the (Chinese) Way
When Peter J. Vernezze took a leave of absence from his position as a philosophy professor to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer in China, he supplemented his main task-teaching English-with leading a weekly philosophical discussion group with Chinese undergraduate and graduate students at Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu. In each session the students debated topics as diverse as the status of truth, the meaning of life, the reality of fate, the definition of sanity, the necessity of religion, and the value of romantic love. Each of the twenty-five chapters focuses on the topic of one evening's discussion, which was always in the form of a question: How are ancient conceptions of virtue holding up in a society overrun by capitalism? Are traditionally conservative sexual values going the way of the rickshaw? Can an atheistic country even have a sense of morality? This unprecedented portrait of the Chinese mind allows the up-and-coming generation-known as the "ba ling hou," or "post-1980s generation"-to express its unique perspective on China-and America. In addition, the book provides the reader with a crash course in Chinese culture, both ancient and modern, as students discuss everything from Confucius to the Edison Chen scandal (a Chinese pop star whose sexually explicit pictures found their way onto the Internet), from classical Chinese poetry to the Super Boy and Super Girl competitions (Chinese versions of American Idol).Throughout, the author provides the intellectual and historical context necessary to appreciate and understand today's China.

Futures of Chinese Cinema: Technologies and Temporalities in Chinese Screen Cultures
In recent years, Chinese film has garnered worldwide attention, and this interdisciplinary collection investigates how new technologies, changing production constraints, and shifting viewing practices have shaped perceptions of Chinese screen cultures. For the first time, international scholars from film studies, media studies, history and sociology have come together to examine technology and temporality in Chinese cinema today."Futures of Chinese Cinema" takes an innovative approach, arguing for a broadening of Chinese screen cultures to account for new technologies of screening, from computers and digital video to smaller screens (including mobile phones). It also considers time and technology in both popular blockbusters and independent art films from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese diasporas. The contributors explore transnational connections, including little-discussed Chinese-Japanese and Sino-Soviet interactions. With an exciting array of essays by established and emerging scholars, "Futures of Chinese Cinema" represents a fresh contribution to film and cultural studies.

Since his death, Yue Fei has evolved into the standard model of loyalty in Chinese culture. A biography of Yue Fei was written 60 years after his death by his grandson, the poet and historian Yue Ke ( ) (1183-post 1240). It was later compiled with other such biographies in 1346 as part of the History of Song or S ng Sh?, a massive 496 chapter record of various historical events and biographies of noted Song Dynasty individuals, by Yuan Dynasty Prime-Minister Toktoghan and others. It is located in the 365th chapter of this book and is numbered biography 124. Although it is part of an historic text, this biography includes supernatural elements. The Remaking of the Chinese Character and Identity in the 21st Century: The Chinese Face Practices
The Remaking of the Chinese Character and Identity in the 21st Century: The Chinese Face Practices
Wenshan Jia demonstrates that a true liberation of Chinese civic discourse can start with a focus on indigenous cultural practices, such as face practices--the understanding that every human face offers a distinct cultural grammar for acting, speaking, and feeling. Chinese character and identity, the author argues, are primarily functions of communication, and as such, these practices are of enormous consequence to the necessary reconstruction of Chinese identity in the changing socio-economic context of the 21st century. In this way, Jia finds a middle ground between the advocacy of complete Westernization and radical Chinese nationalism: as a pragmatic alternative, communication is key. Never before has facework research been approached so systematically from the standpoint of its relationship to character and identity. Jia's work substantially advances the literature on Chinese communication and presents a unique perspective on its relationship to social transformation. This new paradigm of facework--including analytical methods such as Circular Questioning in addition to major case studies--challenges traditional views while pointing the way toward a new and valuable social-constructionist view.

The Jin Yong Phenomenon: Chinese Martial Arts Fiction and Modern Chinese Literary History
The Jin Yong Phenomenon: Chinese Martial Arts Fiction and Modern Chinese Literary History
This pioneering book is the first English-language collection of academic articles on Jin Yong's works. It introduces an important dissenting voice in Chinese literature to the English-speaking audience. Jin Yong is hailed as the most influential martial arts novelist in twentieth-century Chinese literary history. His novels are regarded by readers and critics as "the common language of Chinese around the world" because of their international circulation and various adaptations (film, television serials, comic books, video games). Not only has the public affirmed the popularity and literary value of his novels, but the academic world has finally begun to notice his achievement as well. The significance of this book lies in its interpretation of Jin Yong's novels through the larger lens of twentieth-century Chinese literature. It considers the important theoretical issues arising from such terms as modernity, gender, nationalism, East/West conflict, and high literature versus low culture. The contributors of the articles are all eminent scholars, including famous exiled scholar, philosopher, and writer Liu Zaifu.

The Chinese Machiavelli: 3000 Years of Chinese Statecraft
The Chinese Machiavelli intends to help Western readers, who may be puzzled by Chinese diplomatic and military strategy, understand the principles that have guided both past and present Chinese leaders. For instance, why have modern communist Chinese leaders often befriended right-wing European politicians who are out of office rather than left-wing leaders in power? Why did they entertain President Nixon while the United States was at war with North Vietnam? Within the framework of a chronological history concentrating on power politics and using the social and cultural scene as a backdrop, the Bloodworths use Chinaas long history to find answers.

Ancient Chinese Thought, Modern Chinese Power
Ancient Chinese Thought, Modern Chinese Power
The rise of China could be the most important political development of the twenty-first century. What will China look like in the future? What should it look like? And what will China's rise mean for the rest of world? This book, written by China's most influential foreign policy thinker, sets out a vision for the coming decades from China's point of view. In the West, Yan Xuetong is often regarded as a hawkish policy advisor and enemy of liberal internationalists. But a very different picture emerges from this book, as Yan examines the lessons of ancient Chinese political thought for the future of China and the development of a "Beijing consensus" in international relations. Yan, it becomes clear, is neither a communist who believes that economic might is the key to national power, nor a neoconservative who believes that China should rely on military might to get its way. Rather, Yan argues, political leadership is the key to national power, and morality is an essential part of political leadership. Economic and military might are important components of national power, but they are secondary to political leaders who act in accordance with moral norms, and the same holds true in determining the hierarchy of the global order. Providing new insights into the thinking of one of China's leading foreign policy figures, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in China's rise and international relations.

Healing Your Eyes with Chinese Medicine: Acupuncture, Acupressure, & Chinese Herbs
For the past ten years, Andy Rosenfarb has successfully used acupuncture and Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of eye conditions. His treatments include moxibustion techniques, tuina (massage), microcurrent stimulation, Chinese herbs, and qigong exercises, along with "essential acupuncture" where essential oils are placed on acupuncture points. The culmination of his work--which includes a recent pioneering study involving metabolic testing-is this handbook for healing the kinds of conditions too often considered almost impossibly challenging or irreversible. The first half of "Healing Your Eyes with Chinese Medicine "explains Traditional Chinese Medicine and its perspective on the eyes, which is based on the idea that the eyes and the brain work in tandem, not isolation. The second half focuses on proven methods derived from Rosenfarb's practice, including nutritional, supplemental, and lifestyle adjustments. Individual chapters cover eye disorders such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and many more. This book is intended as a practical manual to help readers understand their eyes and vision more comprehensively, and to learn new, affordable ways for retaining the precious gift of sight.

Minimal Old Chinese and Later Han Chinese: A Companion to Grammata Serica Recensa
Minimal Old Chinese and Later Han Chinese: A Companion to Grammata Serica Recensa
Although long out of date, Bernard Karlgren's Grammata Serica Recensa (1957) remains the most convenient work for looking up Middle Chinese (ca. A.D. 600) and Old Chinese (before 200 B.C.) reconstructions of all graphs that occur in literature from the beginning of writing (ca. 1250 B.C.) down to the third century B.C. In the present volume, Axel Schuessler provides a more current reconstruction of Old Chinese, limiting it, as far as possible, to those post-Karlgrenian phonological features of Old Chinese that enjoy some consensus among today's investigators. At the same time, the updating of the material disregards more speculative theories and proposals. Schuessler refers to these minimal forms as "Minimal Old Chinese" (OCM). He bases OCM on Baxter's 1992 reconstructions but with some changes, mostly notational. In keeping with its minimal aspect, the OCM forms are kept as simple as possible and transcribed in an equally simple notation. Some issues in Old Chinese phonology still await clarification; hence interpolations and proposals of limited currency appear in this update. Karlgren's Middle Chinese reconstructions, as emended by Li Fang-kuei, are widely cited as points of reference for historical forms of Chinese as well as dialects. This emended Middle Chinese is also supplied by Schuessler. Another important addition to Karlgren's work is an intetmediate layer midway between the Old and Middle Chinese periods known as "Later Han Chinese" (ca. second century A.D.) The additional layer makes this volume a useful resource for those working on Han sources, especially poetry. This book is intended as a "companion" to the original Grammata Serica Recensa and therefore does not repeatother information provided there. Matters such as English glosses and references to the earliest occurrence of a graph can be looked up in Grammata Serica Recensa itself or in other relevant dictionaries.

Chinese for Everyone: Chinese for All Ages and Learning Styles
Chinese for Everyone: Chinese for All Ages and Learning Styles
Many thousands of people have tried to learn a language using the most typical methods - studying grammar or rote memory. While these methods work for some people, many others struggle. They find these learning methods don't work well for them. The structure and content of "Chinese For Everyone" applies the methods of learning people use everyday. The research of Karl Jung and Howard Gardner is leveraged in this book to help you learn the same way you perceive the world; through sensing and intuition. Learning a language can be an enjoyable undertaking. Learning Chinese is no exception. To help in your journey from beginner to intermediate Chinese, your preferred style of learning will be found in each of the 31 chapters and in the different activities. Your experience will be enhanced and made enjoyable as you practice your most effective learning styles. The different learning tools include illustrations, vocabulary, pronunciation, dialogues, grammar notes, exercises, puzzles, creative activities and culture. The activities are designed to enable you to reach the beginner to upper intermediate level. This can form a good basis to prepare for either the HSK (the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi exam is a Chinese proficiency test) or Advanced Placements tests.

Chinese Cursive Script: An Introduction to Handwriting in Chinese
Chinese Cursive Script: An Introduction to Handwriting in Chinese
In this useful volume, Fred Fang-yu Wang presents materials designed to help solve an often vexing problem for students of Chinese: how to recognize and write handwritten or cursive-style forms of Chinese characters. Such forms are not usually taught in the regular language programs in schools and colleges. Yet they are constantly used by Chinese in informal communications, notes, letters, manuscripts, diaries, and the like. In fact, Chinese seldom write anything in printed-form characters, since cursive forms are generally employed for daily use. Such forms are as frequently seen in Chinese culture as the handwritten forms seen daily in the Western environment. A person unfamilar with the cursive forms will usually find it difficult to read handwritten Chinese despite a thorough knowledge of the printed form. Thus the value of this book. This book teaches students to recognize the cursive versions of 300 basic, frequently-used characters in Chinese, radical by radical. In doing so, it fills a crucial gap in the bridge between academic learning and real-life competence.
